Former Weapons N’ Roses supervisor Alan Niven has claimed that frontman Axl Rose now collects 50% of the band’s earnings. Niven was talking with Urge for food For Distortion, the Weapons N’ Roses-themed podcast hosted by Brando Weissle.
“It is a management factor with Axl,” says Niven. “This is one other little snapshot that’s illuminating and goes to forming an accurate notion. Axl takes 50% of the earnings of Weapons N’ Roses now. 50%, okay? That, to me, is anathema. He’s not Weapons N’ Roses.
“They have been 5 people. It was a chemistry. It was a second. However Axl needs to be in charge of every part on a regular basis. And look what that will get you. A boring solo report and a shitty factor of punk covers. And that is it.”
Niven is presumably referring to the final two Weapons N’ Roses albums, 1993’s covers album, “The Spaghetti Incident?”, and 2008’s famously long-awaited Chinese language Democracy.
This is not the primary time Niven – who managed Weapons N’ Roses from 1986 to 1991 and oversaw their chaotic rise to prominence – has criticised Axl Rose.
“I’ve no hope of, or curiosity in, a brand new Weapons N’ Roses album,” he instructed Traditional Rock in 2022. “The tantrums of youth look absurd on a 60-year-old. It’s a disgrace they’ve been creatively impotent since 1991.”
Alan Niven’s e-book Sound N’ Fury: Rock N’ Roll Tales is printed on June 24 and could be pre-ordered now.
