For so long as I can bear in mind, people round me have been speaking concerning the “good ol’ days.”

The topic of many a Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen track, these “days” will not be a lot a fixture in time, as they’re a template for nostalgia. They’re the idea of a distant reminiscence – the lingering imaginative and prescient of a bygone, irretrievable period of wonderful youth and reckless abandon, when life appeared filled with promise and potential. You had been immortal, and something was potential.

We had been all youthful as soon as, so all of us theoretically have some type of “good ol’ days” – some higher than others – to look again on, fondly or in any other case. Solely, what for those who didn’t? What for those who’ve waited your entire life, however the “good ol’ days” by no means got here? Such is the everlasting ache of Discus’ newest single: The passage of time, with seemingly nothing to indicate for it. The Chicago band sends shivers down the backbone with their dreamy and brooding “O My Stars,” a wistful reverie filled with hope, heartache, and craving for a heyday which will by no means come.

It’s a hauntingly weak, unflinchingly uncooked character research that forces all of us to replicate on our personal histories, and query whether or not the “good ol’ days” ever existed, or if it was all, at all times, a figment of our imaginations.

To Relate To – Discus
How I really like you
My sugar dice
I’m older on a regular basis
Maintain me in your eyes
Older on a regular basis
Ready on my prime
Perhaps it’s after every little thing ends
Am I ready on heaven?
I’m in over my head
(Oh my stars!)
Once I get too excited
I shut my eyes and pray for relaxation

Atwood Journal is proud to be premiering “O My Stars,” the third and ultimate single taken from Discus’ forthcoming sophomore album, To Relate To (out March 28th, 2025 by way of Sunroom’s imprint, SUN-ROM). The follow-up to 2019’s debut album One thing Has Occurred sees the band of brothers Jake and Paul Stolz, bass guitarist Kevin Fairbairn, drummer Nick Konkoli, and vocalist Sarah Clausen evolving their artistry and increasing their jangly indie rock sound, all whereas meditating on the character of our shared humanity and trying to find connection by means of their music.

“The file is a set of those workout routines, borne from the popularity that just about any second — an accident, a childhood reminiscence, an athletic try at empathy — can function a touchstone for understanding,” the band shares. “The extra far-flung the character research, the extra hard-won the stunning fact at its heart — and the better likelihood of catching one’s personal reflection unawares.”

“Up to now, a whole lot of my lyrics have been comparatively opaque, and I really feel like that may be a barrier between the songwriter and viewers, and I needed to interrupt from {that a} bit with this one. I needed the lyrics to be actually plain-spoken and emotive, with the hopes that it will enable the listener to have a private expertise with the track.”
