Vijunns (pronounced “visions”) is the audio-visual venture of LA-based music producer and artwork director Jeremy Raskin. Since 2018, Raskin has explored the terrain between ambient and techno, carving out an area past rave euphoria and the contemplative depths of electronica wealthy with lucid imagery and immersive storytelling.
Right now Vijunns shares new single “Undone,” from their forthcoming new LP, Collapse, which is out on Sept. 23. Raskin provides some context for the monitor:
“This monitor was one of many first sketches I created after I began writing for this file. The undertones of this music created the roadmap for writing what would develop into Collapse. To me, ‘Undone’ is conceptually the anchor of this file.”
This unity of sound and idea reveals new territory for Raskin on Collapse, a self-described ‘soundtrack to the tip of the world’ that explores the tensions defining our present socio-political epoch.
Raskin continues to broaden his post-IDM palette with modular and 90s-era digital synthesis, lacing the sonics of his prior works with an undertone of darkness, which lends a weighty grit to his trademark sound. Moderately than bask in IDM’s solipsistic introspection, he as a substitute applies its sharp edges and diffuse vapors to render a world in disarray.
Collapse unfurls cinematically, establishing an expansive, desolate area. On “Trade,” sinuous chords shift and simmer whereas booming bass and insistent percussion apply the stress. “Undone” introduces comfortable, tender our bodies; delicate melodies and mild timbres winding by the wreck. “Tessellation” brings us someplace sacred and mythic, the place supernatural sounds and summary rhythms induce a way of transcendental goal.
In the end, Collapse arrives. Coronary heart rending, gut-wrenching, potent, and remaining. Because the credit roll, we’re handled to Auragraph’s remix of “Trade,” the place the prolific darkwave mainstay morphs the unique right into a slab of club-ready breaks which maintains each ounce of the environment established over the course of the LP.
Raskin’s visible sensibility is a press release inside itself. The paintings provokes meditations on mass surveillance, emergent applied sciences, and the infinite suggestions loop of content material that primes a world teetering between a liberated, high-tech future and an alienated, inhuman dystopia.
