If it appears that evidently Denver sludge trio Within the Firm of Serpents are pursuing an uncommon sonic path on their newest single, “A Patchwork Artwork,” be affected person, as a result of what seems like a Spaghetti Western theme quickly erupts into an enormous slab of ear crush, courtesy of Grant Netzorg (guitar/vocals), Ben Pitts (bass, lap metal) and Andy Thomas (drums). The sunshine and darkish sides of the tune proceed to do battle, till the doom in the end snuffs out any whiff of the Previous West. That is simply full-on dire sludge, no apologies. The accompanying video, made by Jake Mulhern, gives a limb-and-organ rending interpretation of the “patchwork artwork” theme, with some apocalyptic atom bomb photos thrown in for good measure. The monitor was taken from the band’s upcoming fifth full-length, A Crack in The whole lot.

Guitarist/vocalist Grant had this to say concerning the band’s newest single:
“It is a tune that offers with a number of the delusions one encounters in lively dependancy. I wrote it virtually totally in rehab, and have blended emotions about it; I’ve grown to love it fairly a bit, however initially wasn’t positive I even needed to incorporate it on the album, because it makes me really feel weak. The lyrics handle a number of the artifice employed and the masks that one dons when within the depths of a nasty alcohol behavior, e.g. ‘Self-appointed king dethroned, Not however a jester on their own… a jaundiced husk draped upon bones.’ As with most of this document, there’s nonetheless a glimmer of hope, and the ultimate verse is one thing of a ‘phoenix rising from the ashes’ motif: ‘Conflagration funeral pyre; oppressive disgrace bathed in hearth; flames dance throughout my sullen mire; rise from the ashes, my want.’”
